Herb Drinkwater Statue Scottsdale AZ
If you’re ever in Scottsdale, chances are you have glanced over at the sculpture of an astute looking man wearing a Stetson and a German shepherd by his side and, etched right beside it on a plaque are the words, “Serving the citizens of Scottsdale is the greatest job in the world” a very hearty quote by the man carved in stone himself.
4 Term Mayor of Scottsdale
Herbert “Herb” Drinkwater was the 4-term mayor of Scottsdale and very rightfully dubbed Mr. Scottsdale for serving the citizens for 24 years and it was his very efforts that in 1993, the United States Conference of Mayors named Scottsdale to be “America’s Most Livable City” which was all Mayor Drinkwater’s vision and effort materialized. Mayor Drinkwater received a 96 percent approval rate and he was exceptionally in love with Scottsdale, more so the citizens but also very much with the city too.

Elected in 1970
The owner of a liquor store and a business, Mr. Drinkwater came to be elected to the City Council in 1970 and was well received and well loved because of his easy manner and his efforts to preserve Scottsdale’s natural beauty which he did so by establishing a preserve near the McDowell Mountains as well as a park system alongside the Indian Bend Wash. While pushing for these he also lobbied that less development in the city’s growing northern section. Mr. Drinkwater stayed true to his promise to the voters that he would safeguard the character of their small town.
City Expansion
He not only did that but his foresight and drive to serve the people of Scottsdale made him make efforts to secure and establish the Princess Resort as well as the opening of a Mayo Clinic medical center. Other landmarks that he left as his legacy are the Tournament Players Club and the All-Arabian Horse Show. His efforts were also witnessed when he worked with the City Council for the expansion of the Civic Center Mall and further connecting it to the Scottsdale Center for Arts. All that along with the establishment of the McDowell Sonoran Preserve, Mayor Drinkwater proved that small town values were still treasured and can thrive in a big city atmosphere.
Apart from being a very exceptional Mayor, Mr. Drinkwater has also been the local hero on numerous occasions from changing tires for strangers, saving someone’s life using the Heimlich maneuver, helping a Police offer in subduing a suspect and preventing a bull from charging into a group of children at Parada del Sol Rodeo thus all his acts of heroism are well documented.
The 7.5-foot tall sculpture of the late Mayor Herb Drinkwater was commissioned through donations made by hundreds of citizens in appreciation of his 24-year service to the Scottsdale and how he transformed the small, sleeping city into an economic powerhouse sustaining moral values, natural reserves, and a merry life. Mr. Drinkwater passed away on December 28th, 1997 at the age of 61 succumbing to salivary-duct cancer. But his memory and efforts live on to this day.
