Jack Knife Sculpture Scottsdale AZ
The Arts District in Scottsdale, Arizona has quite a many sights to offer. But if you’re ever on the intersections of Main Street and Marshall, you will see the sculpture of a rider on a bucking horse. Sculpted by one of Arizona’s premier artists, Ed Mell and, installed in the very heart of the Art District. This being his first large-scale sculpture. The artist behind this sculpture has always worked in imagery and concepts that take the viewer back to the wild, wild west such his 2016 oil on board piece called “Desert Kings” featuring a painting of cacti on a desert. The artist’s envisioning of these very western elements and concepts stick out so well and draw the audience in which shows Ed’s exceptional prowess over the medium. The sculpture, however, was a very new experience for him.
A Wink to the Old West
The rider on a bucking horse which is modeled after the Scottsdale’s official seal and Ed Mell, on it, said, "Jack Knife has a reverence for the Old West. It is not traditional, but yet it has a traditional theme. The angularity accelerates the power and energy of the rider and horse, more than an accurate depiction." Which is very accurate if one has ever witnessed the sculpture in person. Being a central site, if you’re coming up along the Goldwater Boulevard, this statue not only attracts the attention of first-time visitors, but you still see long time citizens come up to it and look at it with awe and admiration. As all pieces of art exist to inspire, this one does so too. The very angular design of the sculpture instills a whimsical energy on to the viewer and though it’s a very stock standard icon of the west, it ends up meaning a little more. It gives the city something material, an embodiment of its seal that the citizens can look at and take pride in.

8.5 Foot Tall Bucking Bronco
Scottsdale being a city that prides itself in upholding its small-town values while steadily still growing into a bustling big city equipped with life and energy, sculptures like the Jack Knife exist as a testament to that very fact that this city has spirit and a soul. Therefore, this eight and a half foot tall, bronze sculpture of a cowboy riding a bucking bronco renditioned into modern art comes in alignment with the city’s motto that is, “The West’s Most Western Town”. And it continues to stand tall and welcome visitors and townies alike with all that it stands for.
